DEFINING CATCHMENT

All sites are required to define their catchment(s) and should include both the catchment in which their site is located and those catchments their site is reliant upon for water sources

The guidance on delineating a catchment is as follows:

  • it is the smallest catchment that contains the upstream land area or aquifer body contributing to its source(s) and that contains the downstream areas affected by the site’s water withdrawals or effluent

  • When a site is sourcing water from multiple sources – either surface or groundwater or both – different catchments for each source will need to be identified

  • if a site is located beside a lake and both withdraws and discharges effluent to the lake, the affected area of the lake should be included in the catchment
